The hospital has new infection control measures, including use of these "shoes". Surgery patients walk to their operating room if they are able. The hospital does not allow patients to wear their own shoes in theatre for cleanliness reasons , so the patients are given shoes to wear that never leave the sterile area. They are mismatched on purpose to remove any temptation of trying to keep them.
