See the sign for the restaurant? Look further down the sidewalk and you'll see another sign. There are actually two adjacent locations. Each is self contained with its own kitchen, cash register, etc. Both are open 24 hours. At least the signs say so. Why two adjacent locations? I have no idea...

Inventory day

Today is the last day of surgeries. I'm taking inventory of the contents of the four trunks we store at IU House. They are filled with surgical instruments and supplies mostly, but also some clothes we keep here.

Diana, Kathi, and Vickie are probably doing similar work in the storage room at the hospital.

Island school

The grade school on the island has 234 students. It's a boarding school for girls while boys come and go every school day. Note the photo of a school bus. Oops, I mean school boat. Since today is Saturday, there are no boys here. We played some volleyball with the girls. Many asked our names and wanted us to take their picture and then look at it. After eighth grade, they go to high school on the mainland.

Village on Kokwa Island

Diana, Vickie, and I walked over to the nearby village here on Kokwa Island in Lake Baringo. The people are a Massai fishing tribe. Once we approach the village, we are met by some opportunistic young men who happily show us around. I've met these guys on previous trips. They hope for and receive gratuities. They will take us to the school, too, which is always a fun visit.

Cheploch Gorge

We stopped at this gorge at the border of Baringo county. Locals sell honey and tamarind root. We are at a lower elevation now and it is getting hot!

Iten Lookout

We made a quick stop at the Iten Lookout for a view of the Great Rift Valley, which we will now descend. Up here at the top, in the town of Iten, is the High Altitude Training Camp where elite marathon runners train.
